Sarus 2 Dictionary

Lesson One:

First Words
written by chluaid

Welcome to the very first Sarus lesson. As you're probably aware by now, Sarus is generally written in an 'abbreviated syllable' form. For example:

  • mt
  • rd sm
  • mdt
  • tft

Throughout this course, we'll refer to this as Syllable spelling. In later lessons we'll be looking at other ways of written Sarus in the form of glyphs, colours and numbers, but for now, the easiest place to begin is with good old familiar text.

Words

Below are 5 words you'll be learning in this first Sarus lesson. There are three columns to help you learn each word:
    • Syllable spelling - This is the word you should learn. It's the aforementioned abbreviated form of written Sarus, and generally how we will be writing/typing all Sarus.

    • Pronunciation - this column shows you how the word is pronounced. Phonetics will often be used in this column. Refer back to the Pronunciation page if you have trouble understanding any of it.

    • Definition - the literal translation of the word. We are translating directly to English throughout this course.

  Syllable spelling Pronunciation Definition
1 dr dor me, I
2 dm dom you
3 df dof him, it
4 r re and, with
5 t ti [to] be, is, am

  Sentences

Now let's use these 5 words in sentences. You'll notice that most of the words have more than one definition each. Sarus is a limited language and one of its distinguishing features is the suppression of synonyms. In other words, one word can express many things, such as 'and/with' (#4 above).

Therefore, the phrase "me and you" is literally the same as saying
"me with you".

  Syllable Spelling Pronunciation Definition
i dr r dm dok re dom me and you
ii dm r df dom re dof you and him
iii dr t df dor ti dof I am him
iv dm t r dr dom ti re dor you are with me
v dr t r df dor ti re dof I am with him

  Translate

Using what you've learned, translate the following sentences to English. The first one is done for you:

A dm t r df dom ti re dof you are with him
B df r dr dof re dor
C dr t dr, r dm t dm dor ti dok, re dom ti dom
D df t r dm dof ti re dom
E dr r df dok re dof

Now translate the following English sentences to Sarus, but don't worry about filling in the pronunciation column. Again, the first one is done for you:

I You are him   dm t df
II He is with me
III You, me and him
IV I am with you and it
V It is you
