Lesson Two:

Simple Phrases
written by chluaid

As in the previous lesson, we will learn a few words before putting them into simple sentences. We will revisit words from the previous lesson and mix them with those we learn here.

Words

Below are 5 words you'll be learning in this lesson. Once again, there are three columns to help you learn each word. They are Syllable Spelling, Pronunciation and Definition.

  Syllable spelling Pronunciation Definition
1 d do no, not
2 f fa to, at
3 dt dot we, us
4 drr dorek go
5 ml mil here

  Sentences

Now let's put these words into sentences. The following phrases are quite simple, but make sure you carefully study the list above before proceeding.

  Syllable Spelling Pronunciation Definition
i dt d drr dot do dorek we not go
ii dr t d dor ti do I am not
iii drr f df dorek fa dof go to him
iv drr mil r dr dorek mil re dor go here with me
v dm r dr drr dom re dor dorek you and me go
vi df t ml dof ti mil he is here
vii dt t ml dot ti mil we are here

As you can see, the way some phrases are spoken in Sarus is fairly limited. The word for 'not' is also the word for 'no' and 'isn't' and 'don't'.

Therefore, the phrase 'dt d drr' literally translates as "we not go", but it can mean "we're not going" or "we don't go". Here are some other examples:

d drr - (not go) - "don't go"
dr ml - (me here) - "I'm here"
df d ml - (he not here) - "he's not here"

You'll see many examples of this very limited structure in Sarus. Always try to think "what is the simplest possible way to say this?", and using Sarus will become very easy for you.

  Translate

Using what you've learned, translate the following sentences to English. The first one is done for you:

A drr r dr f df dorek re dor fa dof go with me to him
B dm drr f ml dom dorek fa mil
C dm r dr t ml dom re dor ti mil
D dt drr r df dot dorek re dof
E d drr r dt do dorek re dot
F dt d ml dot do mil

Now translate the following English sentences to Sarus, but don't worry about filling in the pronunciation column. Again, the first one is done for you:

I We're not here   dt d ml
II Don't go
III You and him are here
IV Go with me to him
V Not you and us
VI Don't go with him

In the next lesson, you'll build on your vocabulary with more words.
