Audio in a Flash movie
Audio sends the appeal of any movie through the roof.. provided it's done carefully. You can do a mediocre job of it and still make a crap movie slightly better, but with some experience you'll learn what works and what doesn't, and that good audio will put your work ahead of the rest.
Back when I was earning a regular salary, I had little trouble paying for the sounds I needed at broadcast quality. Partly because I always got good sound effects any time I'd paid for them, and partly because I never wanted to use audio that could have been heard elsewhere (like ripping it off from a game, movie or television).
Paying for sounds is more difficult for me these days, because I don't have the security of a 9-5 job with a regular salary.
So my attempt to secure a sponsor for the sound effects on Animotd fell short today. I've been spending way too much money lately on sound effects and about a week ago I contacted a certain online sound effects website and asked if they'd like to sponsor the remainder of the Animotd movies. That way, they get some advertising and I can finish the movies in style.
They finally replied today to say they weren't interested, so a little disappointed, I've decided to get creative and record as much of my own sound effects as possible from now on. I have a pretty huge library from all the years of buying from that site* though, so I'll be falling back on those now and then too.
*If you're wondering why I haven't named the sound effects site in question, uhm.. it's because I'm hoping they change their mind :)
Ninja Audio: apart from the massive explosion (which I originally bought and used for the 'Sore Tooth' clip), the Ninja clip audio was recorded in its entirety on my Sennheiser e815s microphone here at home. Here's a list of the sounds I recorded for the Ninja clip:
For anyone interested in audio setups, my mic plugs into an EDIROL USB Audio Capture
UA-25. I'll be giving that a massive workout now that I've decided to stop buying (or at least try not to buy) audio anymore.

Today's Animotd has confused a few people. "I don't get it" is a common one.. but there's not really anything to 'get'. Just like there isn't anything to get with 'Idiot' and 'Green Cat'. Some days I'll start on a movie and seemingly of its own accord, the story will chuck an about-face, going off in a completely different direction than I'd set out to go.
In 'Brisk Walk', his face was to fall off (cos of that violent up-down head action), and then he was going to slip on his own face, like a banana skin. But as I started work on the walk cycle, I just started animating his eyes flopping about. So I created the little office scene at the beginning and it was finished.
As I was testing the movie, my iTunes was on shuffle and an old 80's song came on that I hadn't heard in years. It seemed to fit (even though the walk cycle doesn't quite fit the beat), so I put it in there :D
If you have Flash MX 2004 (or Flash 8), the rough walk cycle can be seen in the FLA here (click image to download):

- Various skin taps, pats and brushes
- Paper "wibbling" sound (originally recorded for the News reader clip)
- Torch clicking on/off (my fingernails clicking)
- Lifting the bomb (rattling my Wacom pen)
- Bomb wall-mount (tapping a stone candle-holder on the brick wall next to my desk)
- Bomb activate bleeps (DTMF Signals generated in Audition)
- Door open & slam shut (my office door here behind me)
- Security guy dialogue (my 'old security guy' voice)

Cool effect with the eyes. I can't open walk_rough.fla in flash MX 2004. Are you sure this not Flash 8?
That explosion made me laught yesterday, but I didn't get
the security guy dialogue. Is there something to understand?
(sorry, I'm learning english).
Hey Adam, why don't you download sound effects from free sites, just like findsounds.com? I suppose the answer is that they're not good enough? Something I really dislike about Flash is that when the movie is long (aprox 5-10 min's) the sounds will get eventually un-synch. I found out what's the problem within time. There's two ways to resolve this.(I'm writing this because other users here might find it very useful, or perhaps you have another method you might tell us ;) ).
Method 1.- This is a very frustrating method, You'll have to calculate how much un synch the sound is by exporting. Then go to the original timeline and move the sounds manually taking reference of the calculation.
Method 2.- This is the best way I currently know, and it works really great. Suppose the movie is 20 minutes long. You have to divide the whole timeline into 6 different parts (because will be aprox 3:00 minutes each part, enough so it can't go unsynch.) Each part, you have to insert it into a different Movieclip(Movieclips doesnt unsync it, since it will start the same exact moment as the sound). Use actionscript to paste the 6 movieclips so it can work once you export it.
I hope that's useful for some people. :)
Hey Adam, I know what it feels like to be said no to. Your animations are great and don't let that get you down. It will only make you work harder and improve even beyond your great quality of animation you have already achieved. As far as audio desynching, I know a couple of methods that have worked well, and are a little less work. Mehtod #01, Put in a layer dedicated to one sound that will be looped throughout the entire movie with the sound inaudible and set to stream. This will keep the sounds stream and consistent. Method #02 if #1 fails is to put in a stop, and a gotoandplay(#of next frame)actionscript in a couple of places throughout the movie on one frame, preferably where there is a silence so you don't get any clicks in the sound. I hope this helps to anybody who might need it. I visit this blog everyday to see what great tips you have posted. You are a great influence, I look up to you and hope to become a top animator of your rank. Thanks .
I am so stoked you are putting so much effort into animations and the blog. I've already learned so much. Getting an insite into some of your tricks and animation techniques is amazing. I've been a fan for a long time. Kudos on the audio successes so far. I find that my own voice and props in and around my desk are far better ( and more specific to my needs ) than most things I can find online. Plus you don't waste time looking for that perfect clip online, you just do a couple of takes and you move on. Looking forward to seeing more Brakenwood when you get a chance. Regards.
Audacity is a nice free-ware alternative to Audition. I'm not exactly sure how well it records audio but it's very close to Audition.
I see you with my minty eyes....say hi to J and your cat.
This is a second day from the moment that I watch Your movie(littlefoot) and now..I'm sittin' in my job and watching all Your films 100 times and again, again, again and again..
Your work inspier me to start doing my own animations..so You have another fan in Poland;).
Keep doing good job!
Filip
BTW sorry if something is not correct in my englishh;P
G'day Adam!
w00t here, from the Brakenwood forums. I didn't know you bought all your sound effects, i thought you made them yourself. For my latest animation; "Buzz & Franky", I made all the sound effects. I used a mic from a logitech webcam and used Audacity to edit the sounds.
I think it's great to hear that you are starting to make your own sound effects.
I'm loving all of the animotds, as well as the releases of the .FLA files. They are helping me alot.
Keep up the good work!

Hey Pierre, try downloading the file again.. I had uploaded a Flash 8 version sorry. Oh yeah and the security guy says "is anyone down here?"
Toonimated, the best way to sync your dialogue/music/sounds when they slip is to raise the bitrate in the Export settings. In my experience this solves 95% of all timeline sound-sync issues.
Ramiro, I've heard of Method #1, but #2 is new to me.. nice one :) Thanks for the feedback too..
Animike I gotta agree with you about recording audio. Today I did the most "foley" thing ever.. actually brought in props from the kitchen and set up my mic on the floor for it. It'll be in tomorrow's Animotd.
Minty we love ya.. say gday to the Deanes.
Filip thanks for the comments.. good luck with your own stuff :D
w00t! heya man.. I don't buy all my sound effects - I've been recording many of them since Pokies - and I usually record about 70% of an entire movie's audio myself.. but some sound effects just can't be created in my house, like explosions, waterfalls, environments, weather, etc. For those I'll probably still buy the occasional sound :)
Glad you're liking the Aniomtds and my other stuff.. thanks for the feedback and support!
Oh yea Chluaid, this tips are if they still persist. Believe me, it happens to me lol
Never would have guessed that was a wacom pen great work. and i am not forsing you to the tutorial section but i would love to see some stuff on character design in there
Thanks mate

I dont know why i quotes him
Hi, i was wondering what the groovie track is at the end?
hello,
love your stuff!
one question though,, with the walk_rough.fla, scrubbing the timeline shows the animation within the clip onstage - how do you get that working? whenever ive tried, it just stays on frame 1 of the clip, making sub clip animations very awkward to work with...
thanks in advance!
ah,, further rummaging reveals graphic on 'loop' mode! hoorah!
