The Scribble Cel

I might be killed for telling you this.. but it's not really a secret, just something that isn't as well known as it should be in the Flash community, and something I'm sure everyone could benefit from. I mentioned it in my New Masters chapter, and teach it in every Flash class I give.

It's an old camera technique from the days of traditional animation and it has many applications. The scribble cel is a technique used to make water glisten with sparkles.. at its simplest, it requires no more than two drawings but in the hands of an experienced FX guy the results can be stunning.

So what is it?
The scribble cel technique gets its name from one of the two drawings.. a page of scribble, which in the old days of traditional cel animation, was inked onto a clear acetate sheet (cel). It has other names, all of which escape me. Yaye for selective memory!

So the two drawings in the Scribble Cel technique are:
  1. Scribble
  2. Dots
Yes, that's really all you need. Admittedly, this is the most basic implementation of the scribble cel and when you know how it works you can add your own little flourishes to it. Here's the guts of how it worked in traditional camera:
  1. Scribble is inked onto a clear acetate sheet
  2. Dots become holes punched into black card
  3. Bright light is shone behind the black card (coming through the holes)
  4. Camera captures this light
Press Play to see the demo:

Right before your eyes, this extremely simple and now very old traditional technique fakes a random glistening effect. The design of the scribble, combined with the design of the dots (holes) can be varied for different effects.

Check the Ween video (previous article). I've used this effect in almost every scene with water in it. Also check my other movies Prowlies at the River, Bitey of Brackenwood and Auld Sage.

How is this done with Flash?
Short Answer: Masking.

In Flash, a mask defines an area through which you see stuff. So we want to see the scribble through the dots. Therefore, the dots will be the mask layer. You then tween the scribble symbol slowly from one position to another. When it's masked, you get the glistening effect.

Although 30 frames makes a very fast glisten cycle, here's what the timeline should basically look like. Then it's just a matter of lengthening the scene to slow it down.

Result:

The animated example above is about 450 frames (18 seconds) in duration so it's very slow and smooth. You can experiment not only with the design of the scribble and the mask, but also with the speed, easing and duration of the tween. Don't forget, a higher frame-rate makes for smoother animation. The above is at 25fps.

Other Applications:
Experiment with the effect and using masking in this way. Another application would be for twinkling stars, glittering sequens on a dress, sparkling dew on a spider web or even some kind of shadow/negative of the effect for some magical spell.

For years I have been trying to find a way to make a windswept grassland effect in Flash, but haven't quite cracked it. If you happen to get something working, I'd love to see it!

Heh, weird.. I had a go at doing this myself Fbf last night with limited success.
What are the chances of that huh?

That is one great technique. Must try it out one day ;)

Hey... i need your advise.

I tried it out but still didn't get quite the effect. Somehow, you can guess there is a layer underneath the dots, and it's pattern. Here, this is what it came out. I added an UFO to prove this.

Another thing I noticed is that the sparkles seem to reflect the stars above, and not the glistening of the waves.

What am i doing wrong?

Nacho, it looks to me like what you are doing wrong is making them both too large, and too spread out.
the glistening of the waves if just the moonlight being reflected off the peaks and the ripples of the water.
So you need to have a definate light source, and bunch the sparkley reflections together.. more closer to it, less further away from it.

If Adam happens to reply im sure he'll give you better advice than me though.

yep good advice. I was going to suggest keeping the dots small. If they're too big or too close together, you're going to see the scribble pattern underneath.

The UFO is nicely done Nacho.. love the tilt on it when you move the mouse. I notice that you have a separate mask/scribble clip that works with the UFO. I think it'd work better if only the scribble was attached to the UFO, and the dot-mask was detached and stayed on the surface.

Wow, haven't thought of that. Thanks!

Here's the new version.

The changes really hit it. I'm still not happy with the glistening effect for moon's reflection's sparkles, but it is somehow a lot nicer now. I came up with the idea of utilizing two scribbles or more, with different alpha values. In my example, I mask through the dots a MC that contains two layers of scribbles: the regular thin white scribble and another scribble a little boldier and white, but in alpha 50%.

That way, some reflections are lightier than others.

Your advice on ufo's reflection worked pretty well. Just check it out.

offtopic: i forgot to say how much I admire your work; I've been following you since Prowlies at the River, and your talent and artistic vision have been an inspiration to me since then. thank you very much, and congrats on your work.

Nacho.

Yeah, that is a really awesome technique, I used it in my latest movie. So this wasn't really anything for me, although, it seems a lot people learnt something, which is great (As always when comes to you)

Very nice technique. After seeing the Ween video, I was very curious as to how you did that. Looks brilliant. Everyone has their own tricks like that, but I must say that's a rather spunky one!

Yeah I never understood it in the masters book... I understand it now. Thanks.

I would like to see what your capable of with cartoon network style animation (flash without a wacom tablet)...

Hey i read that you were wanting to get the windswept tech. right?
im new at flash so i really dont know much, but i saw your animations and they were incredible! So when i was watching The yuyu my brother walked in , i was like i love this layout , and i like the way the grass flows(it was the first scene with water )
my brother had to point out to me that it was water.. i felt like an idiot but maybe(if you havent done it already) you could try to use the effect of the close up of the water , maybe alter it a bit , i dunno, just a suggestion from an amature like i said i dont know much but i hope it helpes.

would this be a good effect to use in lighting effects on chrome? I want to animate a night chase with a motorcycle and have been thinking about light for a while...

Not sure it posted this... in case it didn't, trying again...
Very interesting. I should try that sometime.

About the windswept grassland, i think you should check how they do it in different Anime movies. As far as i can tell, they just make a highlight line that movies and swirles above the grass. Make several of them, put them on a relatively long loop in a movie clip, and maybe that should do it... (not that i'v ever tryed this myself, so success is definately NOT guaranteed...)

ok. I'm really new at flash and I'm trying out this tutorial. I made my two layers, one with scribble the other with dots and a mask. I got the scribble *tweened* (?) moving across the stage. but I can't seem to figure out how to make the scribble come through the dots on the mask layer. help!!
