So quick it HURTS!!
Are you a keyboard shortcuts freak like me? If so, and you're also a Flash user, you probably wish there were shortcuts for a lot more stuff in Flash. Like resizing the brush tool (as it is with Photoshop), toggling the onion skin on/off, switching between brush modes, changing brush smoothing..
There are so many things I would like to see keyboard shortcuts for in Flash, but there are some things even Flash extensions can't help you with.
So the other day I discovered a (PC only) program that allows you to set keyboard shortcuts for any number of steps in any program. It's called QuickMacros and it works by capturing your mouse movements, key presses, etc and saving them as macros for which you can then set keyboard shortcuts.
So in QuickMacros, I have a macro called 'FlashRecent'. It is assigned the keyboard shortcut Shift+F10, which when pressed, makes all of this happen:
The entire process of setting up my workspace is performed with a simple key combination now, so first thing in the morning I turn on my computer, hit Shift + F10 and go away to make a cup of coffee (it all happens extremely fast, but it's as good a time as any to get coffee).
When coffee's safely on the desk beside me, Flash has the swatches palette open waiting for me to choose a colour and start drawing. NICE!

My macros in the screenshot are:
As you can also see from the screenshot, I'm using a fully functioning trial version, but after just 8 days I know I'll be buying this. It has increased my already lightning workflow by probably 30%. Bear in mind that I'm not the most tech-savvy guy in the world, but I picked this up in minutes. Very easy.
Finally, where can you get it? www.quickmacros.com - - and once again, no I'm not advertising for anyone. I'm simply sharing stuff with you that I've found incredibly useful.
Take the trial for a spin.. it has a Quick Start mode, the documentation is good and even has a couple of simple tutorials to get you going.

So if you recently asked me that question in an email and you received that reply, you now know that it took me about half second to type it!

oh yeah and.. the other night when I said I was going outside to see the meteor shower, I closed down the computer and went outside to find it pissing down rain.. so didn't see any!

For the uninitiated, a macro is a group of actions saved as one step.. Flash Commands are a type of macro, as are Photoshop Actions.Remember this isn't just for Flash.. it can be used for any program, even multiple programs. You can even use it to enter long usernames, your credit card number or complicated passwords with just one keypress. Therefore by my (admittedly naive) reasoning, if spyware is logging your keystrokes, it can't get hold of your info because you're not pressing the actual keys. You're just using a shortcut that enters the info automatically.. (feel free to correct me or back me up if you're a tecchy).
So in QuickMacros, I have a macro called 'FlashRecent'. It is assigned the keyboard shortcut Shift+F10, which when pressed, makes all of this happen:
- Start Flash
- Open the most recent document
- Select the Paint Bucket
- Set 'Don't Close Gaps'
- Choose the Brush tool
- Select the smallest brush size
- Toggle the 'Use Pressure' button (tablet pressure)
- Open the Property Inspector
- set Brush Smoothing to 20
- Close Property Inspector
- Click the Fill Color swatch - which opens the colour swatches.

- FlashRecent as I described above. Notice in the right part of the screen, as well as certain other steps, it runs another of my macros: "Paint Setup". So this macro runs another macro.. which is just bloody lovely.
- Brush (Paint Inside and Paint Normal) sets the brush mode.
- Smoothing (20 and 100), sets the brush smoothing slider to these values.
- FFT_Flash is a filter for Flash, meaning that those keyboard shortcuts only work in Flash - very handy, cos I can set the same key presses for different macros in other programs.
- Signature types out my email signature.
- the ER_disneyMovs macro is for whenever anyone asks me which Disney movies I worked on. I press Ctrl + Num *, and the list types itself out :D
As you can also see from the screenshot, I'm using a fully functioning trial version, but after just 8 days I know I'll be buying this. It has increased my already lightning workflow by probably 30%. I've always LOVED An Extremely Goofy Movie!
You saw the meteor shower Adam... you saw it... every little rain drop was once a tear from the planet they broke off, falling through space, colliding with out planet.
And they do it way to often...
..... what?
I didnt seem that thrilled by that keyboard shortcut thing though, sorry :P
stop watching for meteors and keep animating brackenwood. i am so completely excited to see your talents in a new short. i gobbled up the animotd like they were candy. i guess if you are watching the showers for research for a future brackenwood cartoon, i guess i'll allow it. jk
just curious... how do you pay the bills these days. is there any professional work out there with your signature style?
I think that stuff is pretty useful, thanks adam, I have all kinds of annoying pop-ups when I start my compuer up, now I can get rid of them all super fast =D
-Ratio from the forums. (Man I really should get an account)
You need to change your macro of your credits bud! It should be chronological!
(1993) The Three Musketeers
(1994) Aladdin 2
(1995) A Goofy Movie
(1998) Lion King 2
(2000) An Extremely Goofy Movie
(2000) The Little Mermaid 2
(2001) Lady and the Tramp 2
(2002) Peter Pan 2
(2003) The Jungle Book 2
(2004) Lion King 1.5
(2005) Lilo and Stitch 2
(2005) Tarzan 2
(2006) Bambi 2
(?) Aladdin 3 (Not listed by IMDB, 1996 or 1997?)
and a whole bunch of Disney TV shows (for Saturday morning cartoons).
Cool tip on the macro program as well Adam. I like!
thanks mate! I've always been too lazy to put those in order hahah!
btw, the Three Musketeers was in about 2004 (it was one of the last I worked on).
Munch, start working full time in Flash and you might seem more thrilled about anything that speeds up your work ;)
Animike, when I'm working on Brackenwood I pay the bills with my savings. After Brackenwood's done I need to take on some freelance work to top up the savings.
Nathan Viney,
no offence mate but with the amount of FREE information Adam is providing ( the kind you would pay bucketloads of cash to get at a place like CALARTS) how the hell can you not be thrilled?! Nathan, please tell me some info from your flash experience that is more worthy than Adams' notes on shortcuts, and then feel free to diss free information.
Again,I don't wanna sound like the grinch but I get most of my tips from guys like Adam giving their hard earned knowledge out for FREE ,so if you can't match it or better it,how can you criticize?
how do you know my name? :O
i'm sorry
i truefully think, AS ADAM SAID
"Munch, start working full time in Flash and you might seem more thrilled about anything that speeds up your work ;)"
but as you well know i dont do it for a living NOEL... so i dont.. find it so helpful..?
Its my personal oppinion NOEL, dont mock it.
NOEL.
- munch
Why thanks for that, that sure seems like a really handy software. Especially for a lazy person like me.
I'll go check it out now. :D
Unfortunaley, I haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned :(
Some sites have a 'was this info useful?' rating for each article, so in a way munch was just clicking the 'no' button. Not really criticising, just giving feedback.
So play nice, cos daddy loves you ALL EQUALLY!
I like hearing opinions whether it's what I want to hear or not so feel free to tell me if you found it useful.
If I really don't like your feedback, I'll delete it :D

On the subject of QuickMacros, if you buy it, tell him I sent ya (cos the occasional promoter of QM scores a free copy!). Then I will like you and come to your house and bring an expensive bottle of red.. (bull and vodka).
Hey Adam, no fair.... you said you loved me more then Munch! %^)
So when did you work Aladdin 3 then? I couldnt find the release date for that one and don't have it in my DVD library either?
Ive also played with QuickMacros and am deffinately digging it man. I'll be buying this one for sure after the trial and will most deffinately drop your name. May even hold you to that housecall when you are in Canada to promote "Brackenwood - The Motion Picture"!
Sounds good to me!
Aladdin 3.. maybe I should use its proper title "Aladdin and the King of Thieves")..
I think it was the first full movie on which I worked in Special Effects.
Noel worked on it too I think (he's one of my ex-Disney colleagues).
is that the one with the turtle island? and aladdins dad or is that another one?
there are actually so many movies i didnt know youd worked on in that list.
I'm really interested in getting into flash animation and I just don't know where to start or, to be honest, how to do any of this stuff. I would like if you would contact me via e-mail and help me get started or at least point me in the right direction. I shouldn't do this but here's my e-mail: osagerunner19@yahoo.com. Not to be picky but if Adam Phillips sees this I'd like some help from you as well, I'm a pretty big fan of what you've done.
