The chant of the Yuyu is something I wrote a long time ago and it's a great way to learn a few Sarus words and phrases.

The Competition

I will award a new Brackenwood t-shirt to the best recorded recitation of this chant. Feel free to add music, sound effects or animation.. in fact, go ahead and turn it into a major animated music video-style project, if you like. The prize will go to the person who can make it flow most naturally with proper pronunciation and diction while adhering to the overall concept of the shadow people and their dark ways.

More details to come, but go ahead and work on your pronunciation and get hold of some recording equipment if you haven't already.
Resources on pronunciation can be found here on the old forum.

The chant of the Yuyu- - -lrr rmr l srf drlt
by Adam Phillips

close your eyes- - - ldm md mmrm
farewell the sun- - - tm f l ddt
open your dreams - - - mdl md lrfs
creeping we come - - - t ftt dt rrd

drag you down- - -ldr dm trs
into endless sleep- - -f sl mrt
enslave your mind- - -dmtf md str
is ours to keep- - -td f mrr

wither your youth- - -tlrm md rdmm
lay down and die- - -tsmt r tsr
split into smoke- - -mtt f fmfs
black like the sky- - -srf dld tmt

when you awaken- - -f fr dm trm
old in your bed- - -mdr sdt md rmsr
fear of your shadow- - -dss f md srf
and colours we said- - -ss mlmf dt rrl

remember the darkness- - -ldf l srff
and the people within- - -r drlt sdtr
surrounding and crawling- - -t lmt r t ftt
scratching your skin- - -t tmmd md llr

When spoken aloud, the idea is to make the sarus version flow as smoothly as the english version which is why you'll notice that some parts of it are not a literal translation. Also, certain words that do not exist in Sarus but have ways of communicating those concepts, such as "surrounding" which can translate to "t lmt" (arounding) which doesn't require too much of an imagination stretch Tongue

edit: fixed Sarus typo in last verse

Can we have like a 2 person entry? Like 1 person does the chant the other person records it and puts it to video and uploads it?

yep you can have as many people as you like.. the prize will still only be 1 t-shirt, but if we get enough interest & entries I might up the stakes with more prizes Smiley

This is a neat idea!  What's the deadline for entries?  Should entries be posted in this thread?

Yep feel free to post your entry here.. you can enter and update your entry as many times as you like until the comp ends. There's no deadline yet, as all the fine details of the competition have yet to be worked out.

Comments welcome.

Mind = Blown
also knowing the meaning of the lyrics and hearing the tune, it's kind of odd because I expected a darker mood to them. (Goes to show how much I know.)

Nice work Laroon. Considering the words of the chant have a dark, almost frightening tone, you've given it an odd but interesting spin with this lullaby style tempo and melody.

btw, I've dug up my old one and put it in my sig Wink

Lawl. Adam your shit is scary. I'd say that'd be perfect for the video. Sounds good (and I've sung that freaking song so many times in practice that i recognized most of the words).

I know i have some speech errors in the words and all when I'm singing it, but it's not a final draft; just to let it out there for now till I get a better method to record it.

Personally for the song, I was aiming for a different feel, like you have all picked up on. It's supposed to mimic the Sirens of the Greek ( ? ) mythology, where it's a sweet melody but it's certain doom. I'm glad you guys like it so far. The song pretty much wrote itself and it's nice to have a song in Sarus that's comparable to other things you'd find on the radio or something.

And of course, thanks to Adam for the words.

Btw -
(I'm on page 53 of the Sarus Handbook; lesson 7.)
