Good start. I've been messing around with Blender and I gotta admit, it's been fun learning it. Definitely takes time to get the feel for everything. But yeah, even this simple creation would take a bit of tweaking to shape correctly. Keep working on it.

While I have no knowledge of blender, only of 3ds Max, I would imagine you'd have an easier time modeling if you started out modeling him in low poly, and progressively create a higher and higher poly count until you are completely satisfied with your model.

it is still low polly i just have a subsurf modifier that makes it look hi poly
it is actually only about 56 faces all together and all quads
