That's so fascinating to watch. I often wonder what goes through the artist's mind as they add and subtract detail, just as you were. Really cool video.

Subvocalisation of Pieter's brain:

'That looks kind of like a coral reef forest'.
'Reminds me of Avatar'.
'Why the hell is he making them blue?'
'Oh... wait'.

Love the doodle too. Watching you block in everything makes me happy ^^

Great stuff! The face on that guy has really nice sense of form too it

Here's a cool advice we got at colour-class that you might want to try out for your future projects.
Even if you want a colourfull picture you can still choose a main overall colour, then let other elements go complete opposite to get the full colour range without having to use every single colour in the colourpalette (having too many colours usually breaks up the image and makes things hard to fit in)

red and green  (Craig Mullins)

Blue and orange (Norman Rockwell)

BG and RO (BlueGreen and RedOrange) (Andre Wallin)

Many film directors who does their own screenplay are also quite good with simplifying things into two complementairy colours

Stanley Kubric, Eyes wide shut

Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain

It also really helps to use the colour wheel when you're colour adjusting an image at the end of a painting if something feels off. Or a photograph for that matter.

Thats for sure, i also think they are cool. I try my best to give my professional work a unified color scheme.. however, I'm so afraid of getting stuck with the little knowledge i have for painting right now.. that i try to break everything down, draw things that dont make much sence..  and do my best to suck up the information for what works and what does not... if i have the same style 4 years from now, i wouldn't have been working very hard.. I see it all too much, an artist get a taste of fame (via Deviantart or conceptart.org) and they get stuck with the same method of coloring, painting, sketching and whatnot for years! As you can see, my style has changed alot over the years that ive been painting.. i never want to settle with a style.. I'm going to keep pushing my limits forever Cheesy

i just re read what i wrote, and i dont make any fucking sence Tongue

let me try to explain by breaking down the picture i just painted... you can EASILY see where certain elements in the painting make small cuts.. by painting that.. i don't know how to put it specific, but i can see how it does not work. Now that i'm aware of it.. painting after painting it will fade away.

I also gave most objects in this picture different strengths of the light source, so that i could play with the interaction of each object to the other... I'm also more aware of how to do this properly now, so painting after painting it will get better.

I could probably write 6 more paragraphs, but IM super busy Cheesy
Btw i always think doodles are supposed to be an experimental canvas. Tongue
thanks for helping out!

open photoshop, and just paint something with the sole intention of failing. Because by knowing how to fail, you'll know how to succeed - Espen.
(shut up... im just kidding, not really.. but i am kidding of course! Cheesy .)

=) Your first paragraph did make sense, and I totaly agree. (Even if it took me 2 days to get it! JK^_^ I'm a busy and late replier^^)
yea. In the long run, doing different styles and topics is always the better option better anyway. Rules are learned so they can be successfully broken later.

Agree that doodles are more like exerimental mistakes that you use to learn from. I'm certain you see your own mistakes, the crits you're getting are most likely just a reminder of what you allready know=)

Woaaahhhh, love it!

Great improvement between the two. I think the fact that you excluded any of his facial details in the second version makes him look way more awesome. And then having the sort-of contrast by having the elf have glowing eyes instead. Very cool, very clever.

One thing that catches my eye though (and this is a small thing), is the bottom right golem looks a little static, almost as if he's attempting the Safety Dance... but then again, he can dance if he wants to  Wink

The day anyone could do that in 20 minutes is the day the sun will implode.
