YuYu Hakusho, the only anime I've ever seen that's even better than the manga (with the possible exception of FLCL). Although the new FMA is turning out pretty good as well.

Actually the term Anime is applied to anything from the Eastern Culture. If it's from the West it's called Cartoon. So it's not just an abbreviation, it's actually a name given to define the shows origins. Avatar is a cartoon because although it's style is taken from the East, it was produced and made in the West.

So no, anime is not short of animation. By your definition, Adam's works are Anime. Wink

As for me? I used to watch anime and anime only, and that was stupid. You miss out on allot of good other stuff, and instead watch really bad shows thinking it's good just because it came from Asia. I still do watch ones that are said to be really good though. It's a medium to me now, not a way of life. I don't have a favourite, as TheEYE said, Miyazaki is great. But first Anime I ever saw was Akira.

H@m, he's making the point that "anime" literally means "animation" when translated.

By the American meaning of the word, I'm with Eye:  Anything by Miyazaki or Ghibli as a whole is a good bet.  Some favorites that have stood the test of time are Wolf's Rain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Tokyo Godfathers, and Golden Boy.  When I was a lot younger, I owned the full season of Escaflowne and really liked it, although it's fodder for preteen girls...  with swords, blood, and giant fantasy robots.

I haven't seen much recently - I'm either working or listening to music and talk radio these days.  About six months ago I watched Eureka Seven though.  I'm ashamed to admit that yes, I did kind of like it despite the gratuitous Anime Ridiculousness (giant robots on boogie boards!   argh!), but the last episode was a severely blueballing mindfuck.  Thanks Bones!   Angry

"Anime" is the 'Japanization' of the word animation.  The Japanese language borrows words it doesn't have from other languages, such as German, French, and mainly English.  Anime, in Japan, is used for animation in general, not just animation from Japan.  But I guess it's traditional to be completely inconsistent with the English language and call it 'anime' instead of 'Japanese animation', and 'French bread' instead of 'pain.'

Studio Ghibli films are usually pretty good.  Porco Rosso had a pretty interesting way of visually representing the main character's character, and Whisper Of The Heart had the most amazing backgrounds I've seen in an animated film.  Ponyo, the latest Ghibli film, is set to hit US theaters in August, which I plan to see!

Perfect Blue. I mean, people who kinda look like people, and a fairly plausible story with a pretty good twist that remains a bit creepy before that?! Sounds like as good as an anime movie or series will get.

Indeed, while not my favorite anime ever, RuroKen was the first I ever watched regularly. ...So many good memories from that one (and Samurai X OVA's too, those were so awesome, except for the fact that the ending of the last one is the single most depressing thing on the face of the earth)...
