Hey guys,

Haven't posted here in ages. I have a question about AS2 and AS3.... basically, I'm trying to breathe some life into my site but my buttons are created using AS2 and the component I just purchased for my site runs only on AS3. Is it possible for various sections of my site to contain both programming languages?

Is there a reverse compatibility when it comes to programming languages?

Many thanks!

There is reverse compatibility with *some* programming languages, but I don't think AS2 and AS3 are in that category.  For example, any C program written will also run in a C++ environment, but I believe they have changed some syntax between AS2 and 3.

From Adobe's website here:
"A single SWF file cannot combine ActionScript 1.0 or 2.0 code with ActionScript 3.0 code. "

Though, they have added this migration guide for what major things have been removed/changed.
Hope it helps!

I think that actionscript 3 was almost completely re-made. It uses a lot of similar commands, but odds are that you would have to type every line slightly differently to acheive the same effect in both languages.

From memory, AS2 code is actually mapped back to AS1 when it's compiled, however AS3 is a completely new codeset and all of the internals are very different. Unfortunately, it'd be a case of upgrade your AS2 or downgrade your AS3.
