The ashes is cricket . Most competition in rugby is handled over world wide competetions rather than just England vs Australia.

The most pathetic trophy known to man. I personally find cricket the most boring game known to man. A sport where if you don't even hit the ball you have people cheering at a man pointing. Sorry, that is a pretty shit description of what cricket is all about but seriously...YAAWWWWN! I get more excited watching 2 slugs fighting. Actually that would be pretty sweet to watch. When you come from Ireland where our 2 national sports are 2 of the fastest field sports in the world, you can't help but look at other sports as slow. I mean cricketers spend too much time handling balls and rubbing balls on their balls and not enough time smacking balls.

I know absolutely nothing of cricket But i assume its like baseball here in the states because it is very boring to watch, but incredibly fun to play! But i know that Rugby is badass! america is really leaning more and more toward Extreme Sports. We are blood hungry monsters!

I went to an American football game when I was over there a few years back. 3 hours of fuck all happening. People running about 12inches with the ball and everyone going bananas. To be fair I didn't understand the rules so I was slightly biased with my initial opinion, but even after a quick education, and I think i know the rules now, I still found it incredibly boring. Its one of those sports that is better to watch on tv, cuts out all the waiting times, teams talks and general walking about scratching your arse plays. Even then...yaaaawwwn (no offence my american buddies)
I learnt the rules to baseball as well when I was there and it actually grabbed my attention a little more. In fact I enjoyed watching it on tv with my American boss at the time, because it gave me an excuse to get shit faced drunk. I went to a baseball game too, and to be honest I watched about 3minutes of it, and spent the rest of my time there getting drunk. (a bit of a pattern is emerging here)
As for irish football and hurling, they are 2 of the fastest and also heavy contact sports I like.

Yea dude, american football is boring. Yet it's huuuuge here. I played when I was like 12 and I only liked it when I got to run with the ball or chase someone down. And we would play in any weather which was awesome. Diving at some guy and barreling through his legs until he collapses to the mud is a great experience. But watching it happen in small intervals is reeaally boring.
EDIT: that sounded kinda gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Baseball is my favorite sport to watch, but cross country is my favorite to participate in. I suck at playing baseball, and cross country is boring to watch, which is kind of ironic (my definition of irony is kind of broad nowadays :p)

You're right. I started watching baseball for the first time and it actually keeps my attention. Well I was drinking at a bar, but still.

I think it's so appealing because it's unpredictable. In sports like football and basketball, there are some scenarios that are impossible to win (30 points down, 3 seconds left). But since there's not a time limit, the game could hypothetically go on forever, and no lead is unsurpassable. That, and everyone likes watching a home run.
