A fantastic animator with creepy plotlines. I suggest taking a look at his Salad Fingers series after Dog of Man (Link below) and then having a mooch around. Hide under your duvet (if you have a laptop!) And plug in your headphones for maximum eerieness!

Been a fan (or trauma victim) of Salad Fingers for a long time, although I haven't really seen any of his other stuff, will have to check it out.

He is not a fantastic animator. He's really pretty average.

And every one of his flashes has bored me.

He has a very distinctive style but more than anything, I think he's a great writer.

I'm with Adam.  Unusual style, great writer.  It's true he isn't an amazing animator, but it's good enough to tell his stories, and that's all that really matters in his case.

I'm actually a little ashamed how much I like Salad Fingers and his Devvo documentaries.   Azn

Lol, I had this conversation with my dad about the standard of animation standards these days.

We live in a modern society where everything has to sparkle and be 3D as well as look it. But most storylines have been compromised for $$$.

Take any modern cartoon (Yugioh, Atomic Betty, dinosaur bob or whatever the hell it's called) and you'll see that the graphics have become so factory fresh that they're dull in their own right. Compare these with older cartoons such as Ed, Edd and Eddy, Ren and Stimpy, cow and chicken, scooby doo and Tom and jerry. And you'll find a much more quirky an original set of styles and ideas within the gritty and haphazard animation.

I'm not saying that this is always the case, films such a Wall-e and Ice age, and animation such as, uh...Brackenwood! -Have both the high quality effects and innovative storylines and concepts.  So I guess that all animation is good so long as you put more heart than money into it, just like any sort of artwork!

That's my personal opinion of course, but  I thought I'd share all the same ^_^

P.S. I think I rambled...I'm really tired, so apologies in advance ^^;

I am a long time fan of the Salad Fingers series
But Firth is just not the greatest animator.
Story aside a stand alone animation can be poor or great.

I agree that these cartoons are dull and styleless but there still exists today very awesome cartoons with great animation.
(as I hardly watch Television anymore I cant name many)
Star Wars the clone wars is a good example the style they use in that series is breathtaking
though it is 3D that does not take away from the work put into it.

In most of these cartoons the "gritty and haphazard" look was a style choice and the animation was really good.

Most Pixar films are good in both story and animation.
If you judge an Animated Movie you need to divide it into each, for lack of a better word, section just like any other kind of movie.
For an Animated Movie I personally look for

Story - as it is a key part of any movie it is literally the base of everything else in the movie
Animation - if this is lacking the story can make up for it but this can not make up for the story
Score - a less integral part of a movie but still very important this can set moods display emotion even define a character
Voice Acting - last but just as important as a score voice acting (if used) plays a key role in an animation I'm sure we've all seen a youtube video out of sync personally I can not finish it
it is far too distracting the same goes for bad voice acting if the actor doesn't sound like he is in pain when the character is hurt it is distracting and really hurts you involvement with said movie

Repeating what others have said, not the most amazing animator around, but his stories are unique and very well written.

I'm also very fond of his sound design, he clearly puts a lot of thought into that.

Aye...Another thing to look out for in movies and cartoons is storyboarding. Without this stage, you cannot focus on key scenes based solely on script. Particularly with comedy and thrillers, but of course other genres apply too.

Haha, the title made me laugh a little. I always thought that anyone with even a mild interest in flash knew him. But yeah, he's by no means a great animator, but if you ask me he's a genius. His "Video Dating Tape" cartoon is probably my favourite flash cartoon ever that wasn't made by Adam, along with the Jerry Jackson series.

He also has a great taste in music. My favourite flash animators always seem to get me into a musician that I fall in love with (With Firth it was Aphex Twin, with Adam it was Ween).

I liked his stuff when Salad Fingers first came out for the reasons gore and flipped up stuff for someone around the age of 12. But now I can't help but just watch it and laugh occasionally, but with this constant nagging in the back of my head saying
"He's just trying to follow to cool trend of being creepy and liking blood."
I discovered Weebl, Rathergood and forehead shavecut etc. around then aswell and I still much prefer them, although rathergood also has slipped a little to me.

I was a big David Firth fan when I was 13 and first discovered Newgrounds, but not really so much anymore. I still think "The child that smelt funny" and the burnt face man series are extremely funny.
