As fairly new animator, I was just wondering if it was possible to combine layers in Macromedia Flash.

no
you can however put them in a folder so. but thats not what you are looking for.

it would be not logical to be able to combine layers in flash because if you have animated a movieclip on one layer and another movieclip on anotehr layer. and you would merge layers or combine them then both of those animations wouldnt work anymore.

Well if that was the case (2 layers with an animated movie clip each), then combining the layers would just leave you with 1 layer with 2 movie clips. They would still work fine.

Merging layers would be extremely practical, especially if you had a trillion and one layers but want all that content in a single layer, keyframes and all.

If you put a motion tween on said movieclips they would not work.
That is what C0mBineD was saying

You mean the 2 movie clips in their respective layers having their own tweens? I know that wouldn't work in a single layer, but if all those frames were keyframed and put in a single layer, and then the tween is removed, we wouldn't run into any problems.
