Does anyone have experience setting up their MIDI devices? It seems every time I need to go through this process, it's a nightmarish trial-and-error that takes the better part of a day. Well I just bought a new keyboard (Edirol PCR-300), installed the drivers (Vista x64) and now trying to get it set up in Sonar 8.5. But try as I may, there's no sound coming out.

All of my Windows audio comes through my UA-25, and I also have a mic hooked up to it, but the new keyboard is connected to a USB port.

In Sonar, when I use the keyboard I can see the I-O indicator shows both input AND output happening but no MIDI audio is coming from my speakers. Windows audio is working though, like a video on YouTube for example.

In my MIDI devices dialog, there are a bunch of devices to choose so it just confuses the crap out of me. Here's what I'm seeing. The Edirol devices are: UA-25 (mic & speakers) and PCR-300 (MIDI keyboard).

If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.

Stuff like this is always a bit difficult without physically being there because there can be a bit of stuffing around and tweaking, but given that you're receiving midi signals, you may need to associate the midi inputs with an instrument in Sonar.

There might be an area called "software synthesisers" or "virtual instruments" or something similar, where you can specify an instrument per midi channel. Without knowing much about cakewalk that's about the best advice I can offer at the moment but I'll do a little research tonight. Smiley

thanks mate. I got it a couple of hours after I posted this. With a google search I came across some obscure forum where someone having the same difficulties was given a good concise answer. You were right, the MIDI track needs a "soft synth" assigned, which I found in the Insert menu Grin
