Coz I need to know...how come the devil smiles

« on: July 14, 2008, 05:42:30 AM »

As part of a school initiative I plan to make and sell a DVD consisting of three films. I'm in the middle of writing the scripts now. This is the second film. An artisticly narrative mystery thriller. It is about a mother who suffers from recuring dreams of drowning. When the, rather intimidating, local priest shows interest in her past, cracks begin to appear in reality while her dreams unveil the sins of her past. For her baby son's sake she must repent or suffer the consequnces of her conscience.

It is set in the SW of Scotland, in the "now".

CONFESSION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FADE IN

EXT. [LOCH] – DUMFIRES AND GALLOWAY – EVENING

It is hard to make anything out in the murky water. A dark shape descends into the abyss.

There is a claustrophobic atmosphere in what seems like the inside of a COFFIN. A woman (JOANNE) shifts, breathing heavily, until her hands clasp in prayer.

A SILVER CROSS glints in the last rays of light, before the coffin fades out of view. We leave it behind, rising, the light brightening, until…

INT. JOANNE’S APARTMENT – DUMFRIES – MORNING

Joanne wakes from her dream.

JOANNE (V.O.): It’s always the same. The dream.

She sits up, looking around her apartment, staring over at an empty crib for a moment until…

A KNOCK on the door is heard.

Joanne gets out of bed and walks to the door, almost tripping over a children’s toy.

She opens the door, revealing MOTHER, holding a baby (LUKE)

MOTHER: Morning honey. Someone’s come for a visit

Joanne accepts the baby, carrying him to the crib, while her mother takes a seat.

JOANNE: I thought you had him till Tuesday.

MOTHER: I’m working Tuesdays now. I used to just drop him off at Gina’s, but she’s away…

JOANNE: Well it’s good to have him back.

Joanne picks up a teddy and begins playing with Luke.

Mother gets up and walks over to her daughter and granddaughter.

MOTHER: He’s beautiful.

JOANNE: He's an angel.

MOTHER: Coffee?

JOANNE: Yes please.

Mother makes some coffee while Joanne walks over to a desk. There is a pile of papers.

The front cover reads “WHITE CAT, RED WATER”

Mother joins her, laying down a cup of coffee.

MOTHER: I see you’re taking after our Gina.

Joanne looks at a framed photo on the desk. It portrays a beautiful young woman (GINA).

JOANNE (V.O): Gina…

EXT. [LOCH] – DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY – EVENING

We see Gina for a moment, smiling with a baby in her arms.

We return to the contents of the coffin. Joanne whispering prayer.

On the shore of a Loch, a TALL MAN, shrouded in a long coat, pulls on a rope until a coffin appears a shore.

A shovel hits the earth.

INT. JOANNE’S APARTMENT – DUMFRIES – MORNING

Joanne wakes from her dream.

EXT. PARK – DUMFRIES – DAY

Joanne walks through the park.

A handsome man passes her by, making eye contact.

She takes a seat near a children’s play area, while taking out a book.

A woman (WEARY MOTHER) takes a seat beside her.

WEARY MOTHER: Word of advice, never have kids, they’re murder.

JOANNE: Oh. I have a son.

WEARY MOTHER: Unlucky… How old?

JOANNE: 2 years, 6 weeks and 3 days…

Joanne smiles in content embarrassment.

I tend to agree with elephant's VO comment.. some of them felt a little unnecessary, especially the one-word "Gina" VO.
I like the small moment in the park where she makes eye contact with the man. No idea if it's got any significance later but if not, it was a nice image.
Looking forward to more (any chance you can format it like a script here on this forum?)

I exported a script from Celtx to a .txt file and pasted it here. Seems to have worked but I'll post it in another thread so I don't hijack yours Wink

Thanks for the comments   Grin

The VOs are supposed to me quiet, the whisper of someone (Joanne) trying to recollect (the "Gina..." part acting to merge and disolve the scene into the dream). I try to use them (as well as dialogue for that matter) sparingly.

@Adam: Thank you for noticing (they'll be plenty of small moments like that one, seeing them is the first step to understanding them), it's supposed to be a visual film, it's hard (or incredibly easy) to write a script for a film which relies on visuals to tell the narrative. I don't have any software or anything if that's what i need.. Is Celtx free?

Next installment coming... Soon

A bit about Celtx Grin
Yes it's free and it's amazing. Looks like you're familiar with script formatting so you should have very little trouble picking it up.

Downloaded... Now.  Grin

Thanks, this will make script writing and the overall production of my first, rather ambitious, films run all the more smoothly.
