So I have a group of friends together and were going to collaborate to make a simple flash game. I'm doing all the artwork and animation. So far I just can't seem to wrap my head around how to make flash work the way I want it to.

I've been watching developer videos of Dan Paladin, who works at The Behemoth, and I've been trying to see how he is animating his characters for the game Castle Crashers.

Here's the link for the video on you tube...

I'm just curious, what tools he's using? Is he painting on a separate layer from his line work? Are his lines crisp and smooth because he's an expert or because of the setting he is using on his brush tool, or a combination of both? If anyone could point out some of the things he's is doing and tricks he is using that would help tremendously.

Sorry it's taken so long for anyone to respond but I believe I can answer your question. Dan Paladin uses the brush tool and from looking at his videos, judging by how much he uses Ctrl Z and the eraser, I'd guess his smoothing is between 40-60. He's also animating straight to clean (i.e. no roughs) using the onion skin and flipping between drawings using the [,] and [.] keys.
