As for "suitability for an encyclopedia", that depends on what you believe an encyclopedia should be. As Wikipedia, more and more, limits what they allow on their site, there's an exodus of information to other wiki encyclopedias, for things like webcomics for example.
Some companies make only color pencil leads, without corresponding holders for those leads, while others make mechanical pencil holders but do not provide replaceable leads.
