(off topic)It's been a while! Graduated from The Animation Workshop in January and before that I was on a 3 month internship in London.
Animating mostly on the game cinematics for the new FPS game Brink  http://brinkthegame.com/
And also bunch of commercials as well as doing concept art.

Anyways, my Bachelor movie is now online. Altogether we were 8 people on the team (4 animators and 4 CG-artists)
The movie was finished within 9 months, and completed june last year.

Sypnosis
As long as anyone can remember, the coming of the Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.

Watch the movie here:
(WARNING: this film is NOT suited for minors)

As part of our exam we also made a "Making of The Backwater Gospel"
You'll find it here:

 Shocked

I saw some of the earlier visuals a while back and looked forward to seeing the finished product. Now that I have, I'm amazed.

Let me start out by complimenting some of the terrifying images. Some of the moments were astonishing. I especially liked how you guys played with Christian imagery and symbolism, like the "crucifixion" of the singer (and the "sword" of God in his hands  Wink.) The framing of it all through music was also a nice touch.

I have to admit that I wasn't a fan of some of the models, but I appreciated that you were trying to fit into a certain visual style. I did like the strong textures that you used and was blown away by how you combined the 2D and 3D graphics (I liked watching the making of video for that part.) The making of video also showed just how much work was put into it. Seeing the animatics and color keys was neat.

Overall, an amazing piece of work. Emotionally, visually, and musically stunning. I hope to see more of your work in the future! Smiley

You know I love ya Arthur, and because of that fact I won't pull any punches.
First and foremost, this was a huge ass deviation from anything I have come to visually associate with you. That's understandable being as it is a collaboration with a lot of other people, but I still found myself searching for those distinctive bits that I could peg as being done by you.

Story wise, I loved it man. Unique, original, and poignant..... the only flaw I found was that I was a tad bit confused by the introduction, but as the story unfolded it all fell into place.

The sound was well done too, the narrative and music fit perfectly with the imagery.

The overall style of the movie was pretty interesting. Again, nothing I have really come to associate with your style, but I still liked it. It suited the story perfectly.
I gotta agree with Beamish about the character models though, I felt they were lacking. Now if this was an entirely 2D rendered movie, the models would have been bloody genius bud. But it wasn't, and I have to be honest that the blocky design of the characters in a 3D context I did not like at all. I found that it came across to me personally as lazy rigging, taking the quick way out sort of thing. I know that wasn't the case, hell the texture maps on the models prove that you guys put major work in.... but someone who doesn't understand the animation process may see it as poor animation.

Overall though, I did enjoy it. Enough that I watched it again a few times. I enjoyed it more after watching your making of video, after I could tie your work to what was happening on screen I found it even more interesting.

So yeah..... you know it is all said with love and good intent bud. Exactly what I would expect back from you!  Kiss
So on the Bigfoot scale I give ya a 7/10!

I loved it, I watched it early this morning and it has stuck at the forefront of my mind all day, it's clearly going to stay with me for a while and not be one of those see-and-then-instantly-forget things. I definitely saw the blocky-ness of the models, but thought that the jaggedy style did a good job of covering that up so it didn't stand out too much.

The only thing that, for me, brought the experience down was during the fight scene, a couple of the moves (pulling people in half, ripping the rib-cage out) were a little too over the top in my opinion and detracted from the darkness of it.

Wow Com, all those images you posted last year of this animation...the animation itself actually lived up to how amazing those images were.

The style that the entire thing entails is really unique, I think that's what made watching it so awesome. I don't know what to say man, this should win an award or something, at least. It needs to be seen by more people. Such a haunting, visceral experience delivered in a concise 9 minutes, while making you wish it could last as long as a full-length feature.

Stunning visuals...I can't say that enough.

Hey man well done! I was hanging out to see this and then I saw it posted on Cartoon Brew ...

http://www.cartoonbrew.com/cgi/the-backwater-gospel.html

I really love the style and the amount of colour grading and post you guys put into it to make it all flow together. The music I loved, it fit really well.

Awesome stuff and goodluck with future work which i'm sure you'll have plenty of.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?  Amazing.  Stupendous.  What a talented group of fine young animators!

I still think the story is a little rough around the edges.  Mostly I think there wasn't enough development set aside for the bum to set him up as the one "good" person in the town, and his death has less meaning as a result.  That said, the undertaker really pays off as this awesome force of nature that is neither good nor evil - the real evil are the human beings, he's just there to clean up.  It's interesting, quite different from most shorts out there, and it's flippin gorgeous.  I'm glad that there are students out there taking risks and achieving great things with their work.

For what my opinion is worth, I did not think the animation looked lazy.  The word I use for this look is "economized."  I liked the spacing, anticipation, arcs and weight for the most part, and you had to use the time given to you in the most efficient manner possible.  So the animation wasn't the star of the show.  But it did its job nicely, and it allowed other aspects (like the art design!) to get more polish-time.

Congratulations to you all!

I agree that the animation has not been done with a dismissive or lazy attitude. Overall, the designs say quite clearly, "just imagine what we could do with unlimited time & resources."

Other than a bit more polish on the story development, I'm astounded & still have many of the haunting images running around in my mind. As mentioned a couple of times above, there wasn't really enough time to connect more to the bum/singer. He's one of those rude/snarky fellows that you can't help be amused by, and watch films waiting with anticipation to see them make another appearance. When something happens to a character like that, I always enjoy the film more if there's a real sense of regret, saying to myself, "I really wish that hadn't happened to them..."

Great work!!!

Oh wow, I missed out on this!
Fantastic work!

Awesome 3D style! Some of the most fresh stuff I've seen in a while.
Loved the stop-motion look of the animation.
