Deadline
March 9th

This week's topic is "Natural Disaster - Tornado"

For a week and some change, I encourage anyone and everyone who's interested to come up with an illustration of one of the most incredible natural disasters known on this planet: the tornado. Your tornado must be causing some havoc, the amount of havoc is entirely up to you. Could be shredding up a city of skyscrapers, dismantling Ma and Pa's ranch, or even just tossing boats around in the water.

And tornadoes come in ALL different shapes and sizes. Yours could be an F5 of Twister(1996) proportions, or one of those skinny little buggers that bend and twist easily.

Feel free to look up some videos or pictures for inspiration. Being able to watch a tornado reduce a house to confetti is unbelievable.

The picture format can be a maximum of 1000 x 1000.
CLEARLY DESIGNATE YOUR FINAL, in order for us to put the right piece in the vote thread.
WIP's are encouraged, feel free to show everyone how your illustration is progressing.
Please save your entry as, for example. "myname_wda55.jpg".
A vote thread will be made after the deadline to determine the winner. Votes can come from any forum member.

I hope a lot of people join in. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

(2/28/2011)edit: Submission due date has been extended to March 9th.

The older WDAs were before my time, so I look forward to actually being able to participate. I hope they start up regularly again.

Quick question, though - does the havoc have to be acting on man-made structures, or could it be destroying nature/something else? Thanks.

It could definitely be destroying something other than just man-made elements. All that's expected is that the tornado is destroying more than just dirt and grass, really. Wink

The entry due date is now March 9th, in hopes that some people will submit an entry. This will be a one-time extension for this WDA.

Awesome I really want to do this one but I need to learn more on perspective and I am taking longer than expected to learn perspective correctly.

I'm really sorry! My internet exploded and the computer I'm using now doesn't have access to my scanner, so I can't scan in the drawing... Glad to see the deadline extended, though. Hope someone else submits. I don't want to win by default, because my drawing really sucks...  Tongue

it's a bit of a shame no one's posted yet.  All the brackenwood veterans have all gotten busy with their own projects and school and stuff.  These were a lot of fun a while back.  Would be nice to see a revival. good on you snowman, i'll try to make an entry by the 9th woot!

May as well... it's still the 9th where I am  Tongue

I was going for a stylized, print-type thing. As you can see, it didn't go terribly well. However, I felt a bit bad seeing no one else submitting, so I figured that I'd send this in.

The idea I was going for was pretty cool, though. It's a tornado destroying the Great Pyramid, to start off. It represents the primal forces of nature versus the construction of humankind, represented by one of the most lasting monuments ever created. Notice the two triangular shapes, the symmetric one created by man reaching up, and the irregular one descending from the heavens.

Oh Geez!  Shocked I just found this - If I'd known there was a weekly drawing exercise, I'd have been in on it. I love these.
Nice work Beamish - I love the stylized line work. Smiley

I don't have any animations yet, but I have ideas. I also have Flash and Toon Boom - so, we'll see what happens with that.

Okay, finally have some time off again, hehe. Looks like a couple people were interested. That's good to see.

Cool to see you submit something though GrayK. Sorry about not extending again, but I really feel like limiting extensions to 1, if needed, will be best. Looks like in that updated image you were really starting to add some weight to your shapes too. Right on man.

And Beamish, dude the thought process of how you came up with that illustration was really impressive. Even the shapes you went with had an ultimate correlation. That's pretty sweet.
So you were the only one to submit an entry by the due date. Since you have no competition, I feel like giving you the win by no-contest would be most appropriate. I'd love to revamp the way WDA handles those who submit art and those who win, but that will come a little later.

Thanks for joining in guys.
