"What on earth would you ask a severed head?"

Hello all -- this is my ongoing online project, a graphics-enhanced serial dieselpunk novel...

The web address is:

Here's a virtual "poster" for the project, from back when it began (not all that long ago!):

All feedback is of course heartily welcome, and I'm looking forward to reading the ongoing posts in this section too...!

Cheers,

I didn't have the time to read through everything (sorry!), but I've got some thoughts on what I did see.

First of all, very neat concept! I'm a fan of the phrase "graphics-enhanced serial dieselpunk novel" and may have to use it at least once a day to supplement my daily language...

The visual style of the website is rather cool. I light all of the lights and symbols and such. The site does seem a bit buggy and awkwardly laid out. Sometimes buttons go all freaky on me, and I got an error where the end of chapter 2 the next page button only gave me 404 pages and I had to hit the next chapter button to get to chapter 3. Also, the Jump function could use a little work - a false set of numbers gives you an ugly 404 error, where you could have something prettier... Last comment on the website itself: I started out by reading the first chapter and was somewhat confused by how everything was laid out. It was only later that I found and read the "Getting Started" page which explains everything. Maybe have it as a suggested reading at the beginning? I don't know...

I like the work itself a whole lot. The Arlen story is tantalizingly mysterious. The illustrations are great - I'm a sucker for ink illustrations and hatching for shading. And while I didn't read too much of the writing, what I read was excellent. Taking on a giant project where you do everything is an impressive achievement, and besides the strangeness of the website, I think you're doing a fantastic job. I'll definitely read this through when I have more time.

Many thanks for the feedback!

You're so right about the 404 page -- I've got to get that designed and implemented!

Sorry about the error at the end of Chapter 2 as well -- I'm a bit of a coding n00b (it's all javascript and html, *sigh!* I need to learn Flash), so I'm not yet sure what might have caused that.  I'll see if I can replicate it, and maybe track that bug down and squash it.  If you have a moment, what browser were you using?

Thanks Again!

Update:  The new 404 page has been implemented, replete with a "restore" function!  Needs a bit of work still, I suspect, but much better than the generic version...

I've also caught & squished a few typos in some early code from Chapters 1 and 2 -- might have been responsible for some errors...

Thanks again to all who have bug-tested!

Cheers,

Yeah, I tried to get that error at the end of Chapter 2 and couldn't. Probably had to do with the browser I was using the first time (a REALLY old version of Firefox... I'm so embarrassed...) I wouldn't worry about it.

New 404 looks snazzy! I feel bad, because I still haven't actually read it through yet... I've just been very busy lately. I'll definitely try to find time this coming week to read through everything so I can give you my thoughts on the writing.

Heh, no hurry -- at the moment I'm scrambling to try to get Chapter Eight ready for its 6/30 release...!  Part of the personal challenge with this project is to see if I can turn around 4+ new illustrations and a new chapter of type-set text every month...  It's turning out to be -- a challenge!

Next challenge:  this weekend I finally got to see the site on an iPad, and it has...  Prrrrroblems...!  Heh, there's no "mouseover" on a touch-screen...  Hmmmm...  (...mental gears turning...)

Love the new Escher BwH, by the way!  Slinkies!

Hey, thanks for checking it out!

I've been out of the digital loop for a bit, due to a relocation from New Jersey to Texas (heeeectic!).  But the project continues to advance -- a new chapter is on track, and should be up in another couple of weeks...

Cheers,
