Depends what you want to code.  Java is my preference for Newbie applications, or python.  Html for web site starters.

The most common web languages are HTML, CSS, PHP, & JavaScript. You can play around with Wordpress while learning all four.

It's a content management system designed for building a blog but can be used for any kind of website if you make the right modifications. The site is here where you can download the files. It may be a little overwhelming at first so I suggest learning as much about HTML and CSS first. Maybe some Javascript as well.

If you want to use Wordpress or even just PHP, you'll need to learn about WAMP if you use a PC (or MAMP for mac, LAMP for linux). It sets up a web server on your computer so you can use and test PHP code.

You can learn everything with the free tutorials at w3schools.

3 languages I would suggest

1. PHP
2. Java
3. as2/as3 (flash)

Any of these 3 would be more useful to learn then the others, especially 1 & 2. These languages are good because they follow regular conventions, they are widely used, and they are also very powerful (lots of different uses).

Once you get the basics of one of these languages anything else will come to you with relative ease. Good luck with your learning and if you ever need any help let me know, I'm always happy to help a fellow coder.  Wink

For general programming as a beginner id recommend Java since it lets you get started reasonably quick. As an engineering student I use C a lot since it allows a lot of low level access to stuff such as microcontrollers, but it is a little bit more complicated to get started than object orientated languages such as java. Actionscript is good if you intend on using flash, and has similar syntax to java.
