I believe that the large leaves are reserved for moderators and administrators.
And the leaf count increases with certain milestones in your post count:
10 posts - one leaf
50 posts - two leaves
100 posts - three leaves
500 posts - four leaves
etc.
(I might not have the exact number-leaf count, there)
Not sure about the full list, sorry. There used to be one around here, though I can't find it :/
But as you can see, my post count is just over 500 (4 leaves)
Sigfried has over 9000, but still has small leaves, while TheEYE, who is an assistant administrator has the larger leaves, with a post count of over 5000.
Pretty sure that's how it works.

I feel the same.
I know when you get your 1337 post the count changes to "leet". I think we should change the first few posts after 9000 so that it reads "OVER 9000!"
Because we're all nerds, really.
