The sketch is pretty cool but when you added the shirt it looked flat. It looks flat because the costume isn't folded anywhere.

Thanks!

I'm not too good at drawing folds, I'm afraid; that's why there aren't any/many on the suit.

All right, I'm resurrecting this thread from the grave.  It seems silly to make a sketchbook thread when I'm ass-deep in animation for only some quick sketch feedback.

So here's the scoop.  A close friend asked me to design a face for him to model and rig, so I did a Gorillaz-esque type guy.  He didn't like it; said it was uncanny/creepy.  Granted, creepy is par the course for Jamie Hewlett, but he likes Gorillaz and doesn't like this.

Please help me, Brackenwood.  What's funky with this design?

(Honest, I don't know what's up with the hair, those views don't even match.  I just think it would be fun to translate something like that into 3D   Tongue).

I think the design is a bit too complicated and could be simplified more. The difference between forms, shapes and placement of facial features  are also quite even.
So getting more contrasts in that would probably make things more interesting design wise.

Hewlett's designs tend to have big distance between the nose and mouth. Or thick eyebrows as well.

(Maybe too much Gorilaz, but I definitely think you should find a way to simplify the design more to make it less uncanny)

Ri, all gingers are creepy and uncanny. Tongue

Arthur pretty much said it, play with the distance and proportions of the facial features. One thing that might make it look creepy for the guy is the androgynousness, you can't really tell if it's a boy or a girl. The hair is rad though!

thoughts?

That thing looks like my grandmother! Shocked

I'm having a hard time distinguishing if it's a boy or girl.
I like it for the rest tough, don't think it's creepy. But then again people tell me I draw strange things so  Tongue

Soften the sternocleidomastoids tough, they look a bit weird I think.
Maybe the transition from nose to upper lip might stranslate a bit strangly in 3D, also the jawline seems uber defined in the sideview.

You guys are frustratingly talented.

And now for some actual sketches!

I drew the red one without pencil outlines, which is kind of a big deal for me. :3 It is also quite small, so its a bit stretched here. And I don't have a scanner... Just the camera on my mobile. But anywho, I like to doodle. ^^ And I just wanted to share these.

actually pieter, if he took the orange hair away and gave him a much darker complexion he would look like an african, perhaps hutu, man. I say this based off of the movie Hotel Rwanda as I remember certain facial features were attributed to that particular tribe to include a more broad nose with somewhat distinctly flared nostrils.

I'd recommend you to make more thumbnails/sketches of the octopus and try out different species and proportions. The star-fish eyepatch would read better if you added the string bit, but maybe that's making it too obvious... I like the idea though – especially if their personalities clash, as it seems to.

As for other marine creatures, watch a few documentaries perhaps? Smiley
