  Here's what I need:

My tascam 4-track has RCA outputs.

The cable I have for this has 1/4 inch jacks at the end.

The inputs for the 4-track are designed for 1/4 inch inputs (guitar, mic)

What I really need is two things.

One is a way to run the output from the computer as an input into the 4-track.

Another is to run the output  of the 4-track as an input into the computer.

What sort of set-up would I need for this. Is there a one-unit adapter designed for input and outputs that are 1/4, or would I just need to by new cables or adapters?

Sounds like you need something like this to get the TRS Connector jack into your Computer input which would be 3.5mm

The best way to do this is to take your tascam and output it into your PC's input via the 3.5mm TRS (tip ring sleeve).

The cable that you will need is an RCA to 1/8' jack. You can find these at radio Shack and are very inexpensive.

The reason for this is that your Tascam 4 track has hi-Z inputs which allow for something like a guitar or keyboard to be properly recorded. Your Tascam in this case can act like a 4 channel mixer as well.

 Hope that helps!  Grin
