Here are some Miyazaki story sketches that tell a really awesome tale.

Do Not Think of What it Is You Eat . . .But of Who

That was awesome.
There were three things that bothered me though -
--  The first was that the beast was named Mononoke, which was used later by Miyazaki in Princess Mononoke - I'd prefer to think Miyazaki wouldn't recycle like that, but I understand why he might of done that.
--  The second would be that fact that the ending didn't quite match up with the Miyazakian way of ending stories. In every work of his that I've seen, there was always a comfortable ending that left you satisfied (I like to imagine Miyazaki's work as the thanksgiving dinners of medias). but this ending seemed a little burnt *PUN*, he left it TOO open (he usually leaves it open but never TOO open). The curse (or whatever) that was on Mononoke wasn't ever broken - and the girl ended up marrying a giant cat.  Not very Miyazakian.
--  The third would be the lack of something amazingly original. In ALL of the Miyazaki I had seen, the thing that made them so incredible was that they were original from beginning to end. Not that this story wasn't an original piece, what I mean is creativity. This had several aspects to it that weren't something I had never seen, but since it was written in 1980, perhaps I mean to say that it isn't creative as much today. (Some examples would be the Turtle - we saw a giant turtle that was very wise from Neverending Story, plus several other places such as the magical mirror - we've seen this all the time in our classic fair-tales, think about Beauty and the Beast (very similar story) or Snow White and the evil queen's mirror. Using mirrors in fantasy stories has gotten a bit overused. the most important aspect of fantasy is that of originality - if we start to reuse creative ideas, they stop getting creative.)
And Miyazaki's original creativity is what makes me love his work so much.

But even with all this, it was still a really great story.

Mononoke literally translates out to "person of temper/nature."  I think Miyazaki cares more that the names reflect character rather than be completely original.  The name is quite fitting in both cases.

I think I've seen that wheel thing he rides on in other Ghibli movies.  Totoro, perhaps?

Good point - I agree.
It just got a bit distracting at some points because I loved that film.
